Mining Sector Legislation Update: Mongolia

Updated: Jun 15, 2021

Since Mongolian Mining Sector plays a significant role to the country's economy, Mongolia has had Minerals laws adopted in 1994, 1997 and 2006. The new Parliament and Government were formed after the parliament election in 2000, the Ministry of Mining and Heavy Industry has established a working group to revise the 2006 Minerals law.

Based on our experts' research and recommendation through one of our affiliated organization, Mining Law Study Foundation NGO, there are several aspects needs to be considered for the modernization of this 2006 Mineral's law such as:

- good governance within and among other sectors;

- local government and stakeholder engagement;

- professional and institutional capacity;

- environmental management; and

- mine closure planning.

BRP's deep expertise in the natural resource governance, especially, in the mining sector, we would be pleased to provide our feedback once the draft of the new Mineral's law ready for a public consultation. Stay tuned for more update!
